Oryx and Crake: A Novel»rank: 6392par: Margaret Atwood
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca:ln a science fiction novel that is more Swift than Heinlein, more cautionary tale than 'fictional science' (no flying cars here), Margaret Atwood depicts a near-future world that turns from the merely horrible to the horrific, from a fool's paradise to a bio-wasteland. Snowman (a man once known as Jimmy) sleeps in a tree and just might be the only human left on our devastated planet. He is not entirely alone, however, as he considers himself the shepherd of a group of experimental, human-like creatures called the Children ... |

The Handmaid's Tale»rank: 10800par: Margaret Atwood
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca Canadian Essential:Written in 1985, Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale imagines a near future quite different than the one George 0rwell had predicted for the previous year, but her novel has joined 1984 as one of the classics of dystopian literature. Her vision is of a United States transformed into the Republic of Gilead, a fundamentalist state in which women, and their increasingly rare reproductive capacities, are strictly controlled. lt's an imagined world memorable both for Atwood's vivid anger and her surprising tenderness. Surfacing»rank: 26083par: Margaret Atwood
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca:First published in 1972, Surfacing was Margaret Atwood's second novel, following the critically acclaimed The Edible Woman. Atwood had already made her mark as a one of the most exciting new voices in Canadian poetry, winning the Governor General's Award in 1966 for The Circle Game, while her groundbreaking book of criticism, Survival, had started the process of redefining the meaning of Canadian literature. ln Surfacing, poetry and prose brilliantly come together in a heart-wrenching novel that focuses on a woman's desperate attempt to put the ghosts of ... |

The Blind Assassin»rank: 29612par: Margaret Atwood
Chroniques et points de vue:From :The Blind Assassin is a tale of two sisters, one of whom dies under ambiguous circumstances in the opening pages. The survivor, lris Chase Griffen, initially seems a little cold-blooded about this death in the family. But as Margaret Atwood's most ambitious work unfolds--a tricky process, in fact, with several nested narratives and even an entire novel-within-a-novel--we're reminded of just how complicated the familial game of hide-and-seek can be: What had she been thinking of as the car sailed off the bridge, then hung suspended in the ... |

The Edible Woman»rank: 42502par: Margaret Atwood
Chroniques et points de vue:Amazon.ca:Margaret Atwood was already a mature writer when she wrote her first novel, The Edible Woman, in her mid-20s. The elements readers admire in her later fiction--edgy comedy, Gothic undertones, and a mordantly ironic view of contemporary society--are all present. The Edible Woman remains as delectably fresh and original as it was in the 1960s. Her main character, Marian McAlpin, has a very contemporary problem. She feels alienated: constrained by her market-research job, ambivalent about her engagement to the 'nicely packaged' but dull Peter, and alarmed by the ... |
Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.
November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.
Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.
The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.
Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.
The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.
The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
